Focus‑stacking demo (and my questionable flower arranging!)

Apparently, flower arranging shouldn’t be my day job 🤔

One of the talks I do involves demonstrating macro photography and specifically focus stacking (which was a topic in last month's newsletter). When I do these 2-hour talks, I take a flower arrangement which I do myself 🏅 Now, when I arrange it, I do it in a way I know I can get various shots out of it when demonstrating, and not for how it looks on the window ledge 😜, well, that’s my excuse anyway!

I was also lucky enough this month to be invited twice to the hospitality suite for local Kidderminster Harriers games, with a huge thank you to the Hereford & Worcester Chamber of Commerce and EBC Group for their hospitality, food and great company. Also, we won 4-0 on the one match, and drew in the other (Ill take that).

5 things marketers need to know from Google’s Search chief

Liz Reid, VP of Search at Google on the new era of Search, and Google’s vision for this expansionary moment.

Here’s what she says marketers need to know, right here, right now:

  • AI is making Search more intelligent and building better connections to the web
  • Search and the web have gotten way more visual
  • SEO, AIO, GEO: No matter what you call it, the best strategy is to build for people
  • AI makes ads more relevant and helpful in Search
  • Users can make Search more personal and powerful

School Marketing Photography

We have been back at OSH to create stylised portraits of their music students and capture the atmosphere of the girls' boarding accommodation for new marketing campaigns. These have already been used in the local press and social media and we hear that the photos will also be used to give the school minibuses a makeover.

Photography Pricing

As I’ve been doing this for over 17 years now 😳, and I still love it btw, I hadn’t really stopped to look at where the market was, who was buying my services, or how my own habits have changed over the years.

So after realising this, it became obvious that the way people buy my services has changed and where once upon a time it was considered a dark art (I’m dramatising) and every job needed quoting because people didn’t realise what was involved, now buyers wanted a price before they speak to you and the younger generation (I can say that, I’m old) rarely like calling you (I have daughters) and would prefer to keep communication to a minumum. I have realised I was missing this customer experience on my own website. Well, that is fixed now for photography; video will be next month's task.

Life shouldn’t be complicated 😊

Headshots and portraits

It’s been a month of headshots and portraits, and upon speaking to people (especially about the portraits) I think it’s got to do with coming across as human rather than AI. There has been a massive increase in the use of AI, and I’m no exception, but people are trying to stand out from the crowd and show they are real people who can help their customers. People buy from people after all.

What I love about this image is that I made it black and white, yet you can still feel the warmth of the sun.
